MDCAN Embarks on 7-Day Warning Strike Over NAU VC Appointment
The Medical And Dental Consultants’
Association Of Nigeria (MDCAN) has commenced a seven day warning strike to protest alleged irregularities in the appointment of the Vice Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka.
MDCAN embarked the strike following the expiration of 21 days window for review the matter at an the of a virtual Extraordinary NationalExecutive Council (NEC) meeting
held on Nov. 11
The notice of strike signed by Prof. Mohammed Aminu Mohammed and Orof. Diyabu Ibrahim President and Secretary General respectively on Monday said the industrial action would last between Nov. 18 and Nov. 24.
The body observed that no significant progress had been made in addressing all her demands and that the Governing Council of NAU went ahead to appoint a Vice Chancellor for the institution against a directive to hslt the process.
“NEC observe the reckless and utter disregards to due process by the Governing Council Chairman of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, leading to the selection of
Vice Chancellor, despite government’s clear and unequivocal directive halting
the process
“The NEC noted with utter disbelief, that such appointees are still parading themselves as Such,” it said.
MDCAN also friend at Government’s failure to to harmonise the retirement age of medical
consultants to 70 years, to address the current shortfall of critical manpower for
training, research and healthcare services.
The body said their grouse also include failure of government to universally implement the Consolidated Medical
Salary Structure (CONMESS) for Clinical Lecturers in all Nigerian Universities,
“This will mitigate the current shortfalls in their emolument, Entry Level, and Pension
contribution of her members,” it said.
MDCAN demanded immediately sack of NAU Governing Council chairman for his insubordination and to enforce the Ministry of Education’s directive nullifying any appointments subsequent to their directives.
“Federal Government to develop an all-Inclusive prototype of advertisement for Office of Vice Chancellor, the advertisement for the office of Vice Chancellor
as recently issued by Ahmadu Bello University Zaria may serve as a prototype.
“The MDCAN demands the harmonization of the retirement age of Medical Consultants to 70 years, harmonisation of payment of emoluments of
medical lecturers using CONMESS. and payment of 2023 and 2024, Clinical Duty Allowance,” it said.
MDCAN NEC said it would reconvene on Nov. 24 to reassess the situation and progress made to chart the next course of action.
