SWAN lauds Anambra govt for successful hosting of Police Games
The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Anambra chapter has commended the state government for staging a successful Nigeria Police Games(NPG).
The sports writers said this in a statement signed by Anthony Oji and Chimezie Anaso, chairman and secretary respectively and issued in Awka on Wednesday.
SWAN commended Willie Obiano, Governor of Anambra and Tony Oli, Chairman of Anambra Sports Development Commission for their financial and administrative commitment to the games.
“SWAN wishes to commend the Anambra Government for the successful hosting of 12th Biennial Nigeria Police Games tagged “Anambra 2020”, we are satisfied with the facilities employed during the games and the seamless movement of athletes and officials to venues across the state.
“It is worthy to note is that all the facilities including the newly constructed swimming pool, volleyball, basketball and handball courts were all available for use on the scheduled dates for the various events.
“We thank our Grand Patron, Gov. Willie Obiano for releasing the funds required to stage “Anambra 2020” which has been adjudged as one of the best in the history of the games and Tony Oli Chairman of Anambra Sports Development Commission for optimal combination of man, money and material to achieve the feat,” it stated.
SWAN called on sports mangers in the state to ensure that the facilities built for the games were maintained while urging the governor to build a sports stadium for Anambra before he end of his administration.
The association also thanked Rommy Ezeonwuka, Proprietor of Rojenny Stadium of Obiano where track and field events was held and other private sector interests who contributed to the success of the games.
“We also commend the private sector led by Rommy Ezeonwuka, Managing Director of Rojenny Stadium and Games Village, Oba for their immense complementary roles which helped the overall success of the games.
“SWAN charges the Anambra Sports Commission to build on the gains of the games by the maintenance of these facilities and making them available for training of athletes in the state.
“SWAN however wishes to seize this opportunity to urge the Obiano led administration to build a befitting Olympic Sports Stadium for Anambra people as a lasting legacy that would spark off revolution of sporting excellence in the state,” it stated.
SWAN also thanked the IGP, Mr Adamu Abubarkar for approving the hosting of the games in Anambra, as well as CP John Abang, the Commissioner of Police in Anambra who served as Local Organising Committee chairman for his role towards the success of the games.
The biennial NPG tagged “Anambra 2020” was hosted in various locations across Anambra between Feb.29 and March 7.
